Looking for an easy Charleston weekend itinerary that includes historic sights, great food, waterfront views, and plenty of downtime to enjoy your travel companions?

My daughter and I spent two nights in Charleston for her spring break and our schedule ended up being the perfect mix of sightseeing and relaxation. We explored downtown Charleston on foot, visited nearby beach towns, enjoyed excellent meals, and still had time to sit by the pool with a good book.

If you’re planning a quick couples getaway, mother-daughter trip, or girls’ weekend, this itinerary is a great place to start.

Why This Itinerary Works Well

One of my favorite things about Charleston is that it offers both city sightseeing and coastal scenery.

If you’re feeling torn between a relaxing beach vacation and a sightseeing adventure, this trip offers the best of both worlds.

You’ll spend your mornings exploring Charleston’s historic streets and your afternoons discovering nearby islands and beaches. Your evening is spent on the waterfront enjoying excellent dining and stunning sunset views.

Though the weekend will be action-packed, there is plenty of flex time for relaxing by your hotel pool or taking a pre-dinner nap.

Our Road Trip from Charlotte

We started our early March trip in Charlotte, NC and drove down to Charleston in the morning.

Departure Time from South Charlotte: 7:15 am
Arrival Time at Pinky’s on the Beach in Folly Beach: 10:45 am

TOTAL DRIVE TIME: 3.5 hours with one stop for gas

Note: Expect a bit longer of a drive if you attempt that same drive in the peak summer months, especially if you leave later in the day. Beach traffic slows down the route significantly.

Plan for beach traffic on the bridges to slow you down a bit during the heaviest trafficked hours.

Day 1: Arrive and Settle Into Charleston

Your Day 1 itinerary depends on your arrival time. We were able to arrive by 11 am, so adjust this itinerary as needed to accommodate your arrival.

Start with a Visit to Folly Beach

Since hotel check-in won’t be available until the afternoon, I recommend heading straight to Folly Beach. This gives your weekend getaway the perfect vacation kick-off.

Our visit was one of our favorite parts of the entire weekend. We grabbed lunch with an ocean view, walked the pier, and enjoyed the fresh sea air before heading into downtown.

For parking tips, restaurant recommendations, and everything you need to plan your own visit, see my complete Folly Beach guide.

Check in at Hotel

We stayed at The Ryder Hotel in downtown Charleston, which made it easy to walk almost everywhere during our visit.

Being centrally located meant we could leave the car parked and spend most of our time exploring on foot.

Afternoon Shopping on King Street

While we waited for our hotel room, we explored King Street, Charleston’s most popular shopping district.

You’ll find everything from national retailers and designer boutiques to local bookstores, gift shops, and home decor stores. Even if you’re not planning to shop, it’s a fun place to wander and soak up the atmosphere.

Dinner and an Evening Stroll

For our first night, I made reservations at Hank’s Seafood Restaurant, just a short walk from The Ryder Hotel.

After dinner, consider taking a relaxed stroll through downtown Charleston or along Waterfront Park before turning in for the night.

Day 2: Historic Charleston and Island Hopping

Day two combines Charleston’s historical downtown with some of the area’s most scenic coastal communities.

We stayed right in the heart of downtown Charleston for our visit but if you chose another location plan for some time to drive in and find parking.

Our itinerary includes a sit-down brunch later in the morning so I grabbed some iced coffee and a pastry from the hotel coffee bar for us to enjoy as a grab-and-go start to our day.

Morning Walking Tour of Charleston

Start your day early and explore Charleston before the streets become crowded.

Our favorite route included:

  • Waterfront Park
  • The Pineapple Fountain
  • Rainbow Row
  • The French Quarter
  • Washington Square

This walk offers many of Charleston’s most iconic views while letting you experience the city’s slower pace.

I’ve mapped the entire route in my Charleston walking tour guide.

Brunch in Downtown Charleston

After your walk, reward yourself with a leisurely brunch.

We loved Millers All Day, but Charleston has no shortage of excellent breakfast and brunch options. You can find more in my Charleston dining guide.

If you stop at Millers on the south end of King Street you can add in some shopping if you didn’t have time on Day 1.

Afternoon Island Hopping

Since we had already done our shopping, once we finished brunch we walked north on King St. towards Queen St. We crossed over to Meeting St. and headed back north to our hotel to pick up our car for the afternoon.

We wanted to avoid the intense heat of the afternoon sun and rest our legs a bit so we drove over the Ravenel bridge towards Mt. Pleasant to do some exploring.

This was one of the major highlights of our trip!

Instead of spending the entire afternoon in downtown Charleston, we explored several nearby coastal communities:

  • Mount Pleasant
  • Sullivan’s Island
  • Isle of Palms

Each destination has its own personality and offers a completely different perspective on the Charleston area.

For our complete route, suggested stops, and planning tips, see my Island Hopping in Charleston guide.

Optional Stop: Fort Moultrie

One of the biggest surprises of our trip was Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island.

What started as a quick photo stop turned into a fascinating visit exploring the fort and learning more about Charleston’s military history.

Sunset at Shem Creek

The final stop for our afternoon day trip from Charleston was the pretty Shem Creek area of Mt. Pleasant. There are several waterfront bars and restaurants for you to grab a bite and watch the sun set over the water.

After dinner and a stroll along the waterfront paths, we got into the car and then headed back over the Ravenel bridge towards Charleston just as the sun was truly setting. The views were simply stunning.

Drive By White Point Garden

If you still have some energy for a tour before heading back to your hotel, I recommend heading over to the Battery and White Point Garden which is right along the water’s edge in Charleston.

If you have time and can find parking, this would be a lovely spot for an evening stroll.

We enjoyed driving by the gorgeous houses all along Murray Blvd. and we will be adding this area to the top of our list for our next visit!

Day 3: A Relaxed Farewell

One of the benefits of staying two nights is that your final morning doesn’t need to feel rushed.

We spent a quiet morning by the hotel pool before enjoying breakfast and taking one last walk through downtown Charleston.

Browse the Charleston City Market

Before leaving town, we stopped by the Charleston City Market to pick up a few souvenirs and local gifts.

It’s an easy final stop before heading home and gives you one last opportunity to soak in the Charleston atmosphere.

Head Home

By late morning, we packed up the car and headed back to Charlotte.

Even though it was only a quick weekend trip, it felt like we had experienced both historic Charleston and the surrounding coastal communities without ever being rushed.

Easy Ways to Customize Your Trip

Want to make your visit uniquely personal? Here are some easy ways to adjust our itinerary for your special interests:

  1. History Buffs: Spend more time at Fort Moultrie or add on a visit to Patriots Point.
  2. Shoppers: Extend your time on King Street or add a second visit on Day 3.
  3. Beach Lovers: Choose just one island to hop to and spend the afternoon on the sand with your toes in the water.
  4. Foodies: Add a food tour or extra brunch stop. Visit the roof top bars at night for amazing views.

What We’ll Do Next Time

Try as hard as we can, we know we’ll never see it all in just one trip. Based on the fun we had with our spring break visit, these are the activities I’ve added to our list of things to do next time!

  1. Spend more time exploring White Point Garden.
  2. A more extended visit to Patriots Point.
  3. Take a harbor cruise.
  4. Stay an extra day for Sullivan’s Island.
