King Street is one of the most famous places to shop in Charleston, and after spending an afternoon strolling the entire length with my daughter, I understand why. We walked over from The Ryder Hotel in just 5 minutes and spent some time while we waited for our room to become available.

This beautiful stretch of downtown blends palm-lined sidewalks, historic buildings, stylish storefronts, and an easy walkable layout that makes browsing feel like part of your vacation experience.

What I loved most is that shopping on King St. doesn’t feel like visiting just one kind of district. You’ll find independent Charleston boutiques, gorgeous gift shops, bookstores, home decor stores, and plenty of national brands all mixed together.

That means you can spend an hour popping into locally owned shops for memorable souvenirs or make a whole afternoon of it if your group wants a mix of practical shopping with fun discoveries.

In this guide, I’m sharing our top 5 favorites from our afternoon on King plus a larger directory of the notable shops to help you plan your own stroll.

There are dozens of shops all up and down King Street offering everything from clothing and accessories to table top items and antiques.

After our afternoon stroll up the entire length of this elegant shopping district, these were our Top 5 Favorite shops of the day:

  1. Candlefish
  2. Ladybird Books
  3. Tableau on King
  4. Grit & Grace Studio
  5. Sweeter Than Fiction

Keep reading for a deeper introduction to these adorable shops and a full list of your shopping options on King St.

Candlefish

If you’re looking for a unique souvenir to bring home from your trip to Charleston, look no further than Candlefish on King Street.

This perfectly scented store offers a full “Candle Library” of options with numbered scents that mask the notes hiding inside each candle. This lets your imagination be influenced by the aroma itself rather than the name and description.

The elegant clear glass jarred candles are displayed in simple wooden trays with domed glass toppers that trap the scent and allow you to smell them without lighting them.

You can stop in and purchase a candle to go along with a wide variety of unique Charleston themed gifts but if you’re looking for something fun to do during your vacation, consider booking a custom candle making class right there in the shop!

Ladybird Books

Want a new read to enjoy by the beach during your vacation? Or perhaps you’re just obsessed with local bookstores like I am. Either way, a visit to Ladybird Books is an absolute must when you’re on King St.

This is one of the best local bookstores I’ve ever encountered and I had such a great time spotting our Peanut Blossom Book Club books on the displays — a surefire way to know we can be besties, I felt like I shared the same taste in books with this entire shop!

They had an excellent section of Southern fiction and cookbooks and their tables offered options that top the current bestsellers mixed in with new favorites you haven’t met yet.

You can also set Ladybird Books as your independent bookstore of choice to benefit from your purchases when you buy books online at Bookshop.org.

Tableau on King

My daughter always indulges my obsession with kitchen-themed and tabletop stores. We hopped into Tableau on King without really knowing what would be inside and it was one of my favorite finds from the day.

The shelves are overflowing with stunning pieces of Polish pottery and home decor with seasonal flair.

They had the cutest set of ceramic rabbit salt & pepper shakers that are current hot picks ahead of Easter. I’m still kicking myself for not bringing them home.

Grit & Grace Studio

Before our trip I asked around for recommendations on where to get fun gifts to bring home from Charleston and Grit & Grace Studio came highly recommended.

This woman-owned small business has a mission for spreading joy with thoughtfully curated keepsakes including Lowcountry jewelry, ocean-inspired gifts, and their collection of hand-painted oyster shells.

Sweeter Than Fiction

Finally, a trip to King Street just wouldn’t have been complete without peeking inside Charleston’s only romance bookstore, Sweeter than Fiction.

I’ve been following their social account for months and couldn’t wait to stop into this unabashedly romantic little store.

Be sure to map it before you go because the store front is a “blink and you’ll miss the door” in the chaos that is King Street!

Notable Local Boutiques and Regional Favorites

Our 5 favorites are just hidden gems among a sea of shopping options. I’ve pulled together an extensive list of the local boutiques that line the street.

These stores are all Charleston-only brick-and-mortar shops or they are part of a locally loved regional chain of stores. You’ll find tons of clothing, jewelry, accessories, and gift options here:

Directory of Major National Brands on King Street

The most surprising thing for us during our visit to the King Street shopping district is just how many national or worldwide brands have an anchor on the street.

Need some practical necessities? There’s a TARGET! Local college student needs some tech for class? There’s an APPLE!

This quick list of stores is going to feel a bit like reading your local mall’s directory. But the experience of shopping on King feels much different since the sidewalks are lined with palm trees and the local boutiques are mixed in.
